With changing global conditions such as increased fuel costs, traffic, and higher parking fees, there has been a change in how people commute, whether to work, appointments, or even grocery shopping. One of the modes of transportation that has been supported is cycling. In many major cities and their surrounding areas, pressure on cycling lanes and cyclist protection laws have grown in popularity, and more and more people have taken to the streets with two wheels instead of four. However, there are pros and cons that all cyclists and drivers should consider.

Positives: Cycling is one of the best modes of transportation. Not only are they better for the environment, healthier for the rider and less expensive to drive. Most buses are equipped with bike racks and other modes of transport such as subways generally allow a few bikes per car for people traveling from longer distances. Cyclists are also seeing cities change to accommodate their needs. Bike lanes and bike-friendly streets are starting to become part of the city. As much as cycling instead of driving is good for the environment, it is better for your health as it is recommended to exercise for 20-30 minutes daily. One of the biggest benefits of cycling is the lower costs associated with it. Commuting to work saves money because you are not stuck burning traffic fuel and also you do not pay high prices for parking.

cons: In West Coast cities and those with milder temperatures, cycling is a year-round activity that many enjoy, especially those who cycle in the winter months. Biking in the city can be a dangerous activity. Inadequate laws can be a problem for cyclists. Currently, other than owning a bike, there are few other things required by law to equip cyclists. Most states and provinces do not require helmets, reflective clothing, and sign knowledge. Cars and other vehicles also do not require knowledge of bike signs which can be confusing and dangerous for cyclists. Many people who ride bikes are very polite and respectful of the rules of the road, especially in the city surroundings which can be very dangerous at rush hour. There are sometimes cyclists who do not respect the rules by following non-cycling routes which can be deadly as narrow roads, dark conditions and lack of safety equipment can lead to accidents.

Cycling is a great activity. It’s healthy, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and a great way to travel. As long as cyclists follow the rules of the road and are appropriately dressed in safety gear such as reflective gear, both clothing and on the bike, and a helmet, cycling is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and make a difference in the world.
