Key Responsibilities
As a transport truck mechanic, you will be responsible for a variety of essential tasks aimed at maintaining and repairing commercial transport trucks. Your role will involve:
- Inspecting and Testing Mechanical Units: Conduct thorough inspections and diagnostic tests on various mechanical units within transport trucks to identify any faults or malfunctions.
- Performing Scheduled Maintenance Services: Conduct routine maintenance services on trucks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake checks, to ensure vehicles are in optimal condition.
- Testing Repaired Systems: After repairs are completed, test the systems to ensure they function according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Estimating Parts and Labor Costs: Provide customers with accurate estimates for parts and labor required for repairs and maintenance, helping them understand the costs involved and gain their trust as a service provider.
- Advising Customers: Communicate effectively with customers about the work performed on their vehicles, explaining any issues and suggesting future repair requirements to enhance vehicle safety and performance.
- Maintaining Detailed Records: Keep meticulous records of repairs and maintenance services performed, which is essential for tracking vehicle history and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Tasks
In addition to the key responsibilities, your daily tasks will encompass the following:
- Adjust and Repair Truck-Trailer Systems: Work on various truck-trailer systems, ensuring they operate seamlessly together and meet safety standards.
- Inspect and Test Units for Mechanical Issues: Regularly inspect vehicles to identify potential problems before they escalate, providing preventative maintenance services that protect the longevity of the trucks.
- Replace Worn or Damaged Parts: Proactively replace parts that are no longer functioning correctly to prevent breakdowns and ensure vehicles remain operational.
- Conduct Diagnostic Tests: Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to perform tests on electrical systems, engines, and other mechanical components, pinpointing issues effectively.
- Perform Routine Maintenance: Carry out routine services such as lubrication, fluid level checks, and filter replacements to keep trucks in good working condition.
- Complete Necessary Paperwork: Fill out service reports and documentation, ensuring all information related to repairs and customer interactions is accurately recorded for future reference.
Qualifications
To qualify for this role, candidates must meet specific educational and experiential requirements, as well as possess essential skills and attributes:
- Education:
- Must hold a Registered Apprenticeship Certificate or equivalent.
- Experience:
- 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in a similar role working specifically on transport trucks is required. This experience should demonstrate familiarity with a range of truck systems like Engine repair, 4-wheel drive, Electrical and electronic system, Diagnostics, Alignment, steering and suspension, Brake system, Hydraulic system, Fuel and emission system, Automatic transmission, Standard transmission, Engine repair and overhaul, Drive train components, Truck-trailer repair, Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
- Skills:
- Mechanical Aptitude: Proficient in diagnosing and repairing engines, brake systems, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
- Electrical Knowledge: Understanding of electrical and electronic systems, enabling effective troubleshooting and repairs.
- Diagnostic Proficiency: Skilled in using diagnostic tools to identify mechanical issues.
- Attention to Detail: Must exhibit a keen eye for detail to ensure that all repairs meet industry safety standards.
- Customer Interaction Skills: Ability to communicate clearly with customers, providing updates and recommendations regarding their vehicles.
- Cost Estimation Skills: Experience in estimating costs for parts and labor to provide transparent pricing to clients.
- Physical Requirements:
- Physically capable of lifting heavy parts and equipment and standing for extended periods.
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are crucial for performing precise mechanical tasks.
- Must be able to work in fast-paced environments and occasionally handle overtime to meet operational demands.
- Certifications:
- Must possess a Truck and Transport Mechanic Red Seal Endorsement.
- A valid driver’s license is required for occasional vehicle transport duties.
